Monterosso

Le Cinque Terre

Monterosso, the most popular

Long accessible from Levanto by carriage road, it is undoubtedly the most popular resort of the Cinque Terre. From the Convento dei Cappuccini and even higher up from the ancient Castello dei Fieschi, now a cemetery, the view takes in a magnificent panorama of a large stretch of coastline: on one side the steep Punta Mesco, dominated by the ruins of the Abbazia dl S. Antonio, on the other the steep, vine-clad coastline with Vernazza, Corniglia and Manarola as far as Capo di Monte Nero.

A pleasant walk from Monterosso leads to Madonna di Soviore, the oldest sanctuary in Liguria. It dates back to the 11th century when, according to tradition, people who had escaped Rotari's Lombard invasions found refuge there and later founded Monterosso. Of particular naturalistic interest are two small cork oak forests (to locate them, ask for Colle Maddalena and Costa Lapau). The rich undergrowth of Mediterranean species is mixed with elements of Central European and Atlantic origin.
